Briefly: The Food and Drug Administration recently offered a glimpse into its comprehensive analysis justifying its recommendation to reschedule marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III under the Controlled Substances Act.

So Basically: The 2023 fiscal year Drug Safety Priorities report revealed an eight-factor analysis drawing upon “numerous data sources.”

But Wait: The center’s methods extended beyond traditional research, delving into the lived experiences of cannabis users themselves.

Specifically: A team of social scientists “manually analyz[ed] hundreds of posts on publicly available online/social media platforms.”

So What? This unprecedented step sought to capture “context directly from users regarding marijuana, including its effectiveness for several therapeutic purposes.”

What Next: The FDA submitted its recommendation to reschedule cannabis to the DEA in August 2023. Whether the DEA adopts the recommendation remains to be seen.

Briefly: The German parliament is gearing up for a decisive week as at least eight committees are poised to review a comprehensive bill aimed at legalizing cannabis.

That Said: Amid this forward momentum, the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union of Germany filed a motion to halt the legislation process.

But Still: German’s Health Minister Karl Lauterbach remains optimistic, citing “definite” support for the bill’s enactment.

So What? If passed, this bill could mark a crucial moment in the country’s and Europe’s drug policy reform efforts.

What Next: The deliberations, scheduled for Wednesday, precede the final vote scheduled for Friday.
