ONE FOR THE ROAD
Briefly: Virginia lawmakers took a big step toward normalizing cannabis use in the state.
What Happened: New legislation seeking to protect parents and guardians against any cannabis-related discriminatory actions was unanimously approved by the Virginia Senate on Friday.
What It Does: The legislation states that "a child shall not be considered an abused or neglected child, and no person shall be denied custody or visitation of a child, based only on the fact that the childās parent possessed or consumed legally authorized substances."
What It Means: In short, the law would prohibit the use of cannabis as sole evidence of child abuse or neglect. Virginia was the first state in the South to legalize recreational use, but has yet to establish a framework for selling it.
