ONE FOR THE ROAD

Briefly: Can weed users exercise their Second Amendment right? The debate rages on.

Back Up: Under federal law, it is illegal for anyone who uses cannabis to own a gun. The federal government argues weed can impair judgment and reaction time, potentially increasing the risk of accidents or misuse of firearms.

But Then: Critics argue this leads to unfair and discriminatory practices. For example, during a routine gun dealer audit, an ATF investigator stopped the sale of a handgun to a man solely because he allegedly smelled of marijuana.

So Then: The man, according to the Second Amendment Foundation, vehemently denied any cannabis use and said he'd already passed a background check. The ATF acknowledged the smell could have been secondhand smoke, raising questions about its justification.
