TOP STORY
Briefly: The Drug Enforcement Administration is apparently on the verge of rescheduling cannabis, potentially within days or weeks.
So Basically: The latest rumor stems from Adrian Snead, a D.C. insider who previously worked with SAFE Banking Act sponsor Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR).
So Then: Snead tweeted, āBig #cannabis announcement is coming from the White House this week,ā continuing, āI suspect it will be a rescheduling decision, but it could also be something more drastic.ā
Back Up: At the moment, cannabis remains on Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act alongside heroin and LSD, signifying no accepted medical value and high potential for abuse. Rescheduling would bump it down to Schedule III, placing it among anabolic steroids and Tylenol with codeine.
That Said: A coalition of progressive senators have pushed the DEA to go further and ādescheduleā cannabis, or remove it from the Controlled Substances Act entirely, similar to how alcohol and tobacco are regulated.
What Next: The DEA's imminent decision represents a milestone, but it could be just one more step in a marathon. Read more here.
